What is a SACCOS?

Is an acronym for Savings and Credit Cooperative Society

This is an association of people united voluntarily to meet their common economic and social needs through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise or business.

A SACCOS is a member owned financial cooperative whose primary objective is to mobilize savings and afford member access to loans on competitive terms as a way of enhancing their socio-economic wellbeing.

It is an organization owned by people living in one area or working together. E.g. Mine workers, farmers.

WHO OWNS AND RUNS A SACCOS

The members are the owners of a SACCOS.
Members

Members are the heart of a SACCOS and are reasons for the SACCOS’s existence. The members are the owners of a SACCOS.

Controlled organization

A SACCOS is a democratically run and controlled organization. The affairs of a SACCOS are managed and administered by Board Of Directors elected at Annual General Meeting.

Manager and support staff

It is this board that hires a Manager and support staff to run the day to day operations of a SACCOS.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Management Board’s purpose is to maintain general directions and control, establish The operating policies and to keep members well informed of the progress of the society.

CREDIT COMMITTEE

The committee is responsible for processing loan applications from members and make surethat it follows all recommendations and procedures.

SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE

This committee is responsible for checking that all operations of the SACCOS are being executed according to the established set of rules.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The committee is the mouth– peace of the SACCOS and as such,it is mainly responsible for the provision of continuous education to SACCOS
